Males normally feature up to 6 bars along the body, which are normally black. The body color for this species depends on the locale, normally yellow/blue/white. Dominant males will show strong barring. The caudal and pectoral fins are normally black too. Some males will have a black dorsal fin. Females are normally a light beige/cream or brown in color. They can also show barring when stressed or when no male is present.
