Distribution: Occurs from Nkhata bay to Charo in the north west of Lake Malawi.
Habitat: Rocky areas, both sediment-rich and sediment-free at depths of between 10 and 25 meters.
Diet: They are omnivourous, feeding on aufwuchs from rocks and plankton where available.
Appearance: Males are a strong yellow/orange. Black barring is not uncommon for this species and some may have blue markings on the face and/or body (Nkhata). Barring can occur on only half the body in some species (Charo), whilst others may show little or no barring at all (Lions Cove).
Female zebra gold are either brown or OB.
